What Are Team Tempos?

Team Tempos are KickOffProfits’ way of measuring how a team plays right now: how much attacking pressure they create and how well they stop opponents from creating chances. They are built from thousands of matches across the major leagues we track.

Every team gets two core tempo ratings:

• Attack Tempo – how aggressively a team is creating chances compared to their league.
• Defence Tempo – how strongly a team is suppressing their opponents’ chances compared to their league.

On our tables you’ll usually see these in a compact form, for example:

• H_A_T – Home team Attack Tempo
• A_A_T – Away team Attack Tempo
• H_D_T – Home team Defence Tempo
• A_D_T – Away team Defence Tempo

Positive values mean “stronger than league average”, negative values mean “weaker than league average”.

How Team Tempos Are Generated

Team Tempos are not opinion or guesswork. They are calculated automatically from real match data for each league:

1. We start from core stats for every team in every match:
   • Shots on target
   • Dangerous attacks
   • Corners
   • Goals scored and conceded
2. We compare each team to their league on that matchday.
   For each league and matchday we find the average stats, then measure how far above or below that average each team was. This gives us residuals – “above/below normal for this league and day”.
3. We separate attack from defence properly.
   • Attack Tempo uses the team’s own residuals (their shots on target, dangerous attacks, corners).
   • Defence Tempo uses the opponent’s residuals (what the team allowed the opposition to do). If opponents consistently create less than league average, the team’s Defence Tempo is positive.
4. We smooth everything over time.
   We don’t overreact to one crazy game. Instead, we use an exponentially weighted average over roughly the last 40–50 matches (with more weight on recent games, less on older ones). This produces a stable “current profile” for each team.
5. We also track finishing.
   • Attack Finish – are they scoring more or fewer goals than the league would expect from their chances?
   • Defence Finish – are they conceding more or fewer goals than expected from what they allow?

The result is a daily snapshot for every team: how they currently create chances, how they suppress opponents, and how clinical or leaky they have been in front of goal.

How to Read the Fixture Tempo Table

For upcoming fixtures we combine both teams’ tempos into easy-to-read matchup numbers and labels:

• dA_vs_D_H – Home Attack vs Away Defence mismatch.
  Higher positive values = home side has a clear attacking edge.
• dA_vs_D_A – Away Attack vs Home Defence mismatch.
  Higher positive values = away side has a clear attacking edge.
• dSoT, dDA, dCor – differences in shots on target, dangerous attacks and corners profiles between the two teams.
• dFin_H, dFin_A – finishing differences: how much hotter or colder each side has been in front of goal.
• Edge – a quick label summarising the matchup: HOME STRONG, AWAY STRONG, HOME EDGE, AWAY EDGE or BALANCED.
• Verdict – a simple idea of where the tempo and finishing profile points: for example “Over goals / Shots Over” or “Under goals / Team Totals Unders”.

Example: If you see:
Edge: HOME STRONG and a big positive dA_vs_D_H, it means the home side is creating much more than average and facing a defence that allows more than average. That’s a natural candidate to look at overs, home goals, or home shots markets.

Why You’d Use Team Tempos

Team Tempos are designed to help you:

• See beyond the league table. A mid-table side with red-hot Attack Tempo might be about to go on a run. A “big name” club with weak Defence Tempo might be overrated.
• Spot mismatches quickly. Large gaps in attack vs defence tempos and shot/corner profiles highlight fixtures where the style clash really matters.
• Find the right market, not just the right team. A strong attacking edge plus big shot and corner deltas might point you toward goals, shots or corners rather than just 1X2.
• Build your own filters. Combine Tempo edges with your own rules (odds ranges, leagues, time of day, etc.) to create and test systems that fit your style.

Team Tempos are not tips and they don’t guarantee outcomes. They are a structured, data-based way to see how teams are really playing right now, and to help you focus your time on the most interesting matches and markets.
